In South Park's 86th episode, Butters, a.k.a. Professor Chaos, concocts various schemes to wreak havoc but abandons each when he learns that ""The Simpsons already did it."" By the end of its historic 20th season, The Simpsons comprised more than 440 episodes, so imagine the challenge for the writers to come up with something they haven't already done or resist the temptation to make every episode a clip show. So it's heartening to see that after two decades, The Simpsons still draws inspiration from such highbrow sources as Stanley Donen's 1967 sophisticated romantic comedy Two for the Road (the episode ""Dangerous Curves""), Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures (""Lisa the Drama Queen""), and Ayn Rand and Shakespeare (""Four Great Women and a Manicure""). The flashback episode ""Take My Life, Please,"" marks the show's switch to high definition and the debut of a spectacular new opening with some of the best couch gags ever (except for one that Comic Book Guy inevitably declares to be the worst). Episodes such as ""Sex, Pies and Idiot Scrapes"" (Homer and Ned become bounty hunters), ""Lost Verizon"" (the family chases Bart to Machu Picchu), and ""Waverly Hills 9-0-2-1-D'Oh"" (Alaska Nebraska???) are good; they're just not Simpsons good. But those who claim that the show has lost its heart are directed to the touching ""Dangerous Curves"" and ""Eeny Teeny Maya, Moe,"" in which Moe falls in love with a little person. The voice work by the core ensemble is as inspired as ever. Dan Castellaneta won an Emmy for ""Father Knows Worst."" Notable guest stars this season include Denis Leary as himself, Emily Blunt as Lisa's partner in fantasy in ""Lisa the Drama Queen,"" Anne Hathaway as a goodhearted older girl who captures Bart's affections, and Jodie Foster as the rebellious voice of Maggie in ""Four Great Women and a Manicure."" Two separate episodes feature rousing renditions of the show's theme performed by Fall Out Boy and by a cappella group Canvas, respectively.
It makes good business sense to release The Complete 20th Season in advance of seasons 13 to 19. When an animated series ties (and has now surpassed) Gunsmoke as prime time's longest running show, attention must be paid (and exploited). But unlike previous sets, there are none of the extras Simpsonites have come to expect save for a less-than-4-minute ""sneak peek"" at Morgan Spurlock's excellent 20th-anniversary special. In trying to come up with just the right clever thing to say about that, one must look, as with everything in life, to an episode of The Simpsons, the one in which Bart discards a Where's Waldo book that eschews the usual crowd scenes for a single life-size illustration of Waldo. Summary: "Gee, I almost feel bad for making a review here"
Well, I bought this from the store and opened it on the way home. I was disappointed at first because of the way the box opens, and the discs were already scratched from the design of the disc-holders. The episodes were pretty great, as I've never seen these on FOX, since I stopped watching after season 12 and I'm a LIFELONG Simpsons fan. I have seasons 1-10 and I love them, they are surely a part of my life. But the problem is that this one (like all the ratings despise so far also) lacks commentary or anything special about it being season 20! What gives? No commentary?? AT LEAST put commentary even if it sucks lol. Maybe some cool stickers? Something! With the fact that most of the reviews are ONE star, I won't say anything else. But the lack of commentary is just... wtf?

First, I am a huge fan of the Simpsons. The wrtiting teams of today leave a little to be desired from earlier seasons(about 11 and down). Regardless, I still think it's one of the better shows on network.
Second, I regret not reading the reviews on Amazon before impulsivly buying this in store just before Season 13 was released. As stated before, no, there are no commentaries or deleted scenes with this boxset. The previous seasons' commentaries included in previous boxsets were rather hilarious, and I was a little disappointed that these were not included for Season 20. Still the just released Season 13 included both basic special features and more. I believe Fox is trying to catch up by releasing boxsets from both ends of the series. It would be a good idea if they weren't cutting effort in one release just to hold off fans until the next season is released. One minor note, the "enviromental friendly" packaging now used in Simpsons/Futurama boxsets is somehow less annoying. The cardboard sleeves to store the DVDs seem to be much loose. The last Simpsons boxset that came with this packaging was insanely tight, causing dvds to easily get scratched removing them. This no longer seems to be the case. It's still the same container, just redesigned for convenient/less damaging storage.
Overall, if you're a fan of the later seasons and not too concerned for special features, this is a great buy. For other fans, you'll be disappointed in the lack of content for the price. Honestly, it seems fair for a bare-bones season for anything less than $25, just let it be known what is/isn't offered in the boxset.

Summary: "Lackluster at best"
I received this set as a gift for my birthday and was fairly excited about it because I knew they had switch to an HD format mid-season. I began watching it and, while I enjoyed the episodes, I was extremely disappointed by the complete and total lack of ANY extra features. If you purchase this set, you get the episodes and that is it. No commentary, no deleted scenes, no foreign language clips, nothing else at all. So, look at the price of this and unless it is on sale for around ten or fifteen dollars, don't purchase it because, if you are used to the season 1-12 DVD sets, YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED. I was.
